DRUMANY PORTAL TOMB CO.LEITRIM
|
Now and then i come across a hidden and lost gem of a tomb and
this is one of them. This portal tomb, which is not far from Drumany wedge tomb,
was built with massive granite stones and is now hidden amongst dense Whitethorn
bushes. Its capstone is now split in two with one half lying on the chamber floor.
The remaining part of the capstone is supported by two massive portal stones one
standing 1.9 metres tall ( which is also split ) and the other 2 metres tall. The small
door slab is still in place and there is another huge blocking stone at the back of the
chamber. There is some evidence of a cairn material at the back and sides of the
sides of the tomb but some of it may be field clearance. Well worth a visit but watch
out for the thorns.
