| HUNGRY HILL STONE CIRCLE |

| Antiquarian drawings play an important role in the study of Irish field monuments, hundreds of which have been sacrificed in the last century in the name of agricultural progress. The stone circle on the slopes of Hungry Hill, Bear Island, County Cork is a prime example and appears to be the stone circle recorded as Curraduff, which was removed about 1970. According to local residents about five stones were still standing at the time, the number shown in the watercolour. In his text Grose speaks of seven stones, with a further six lying nearby, making a total of thirteen altogether. DANIEL GROSE (1766 - 1838) |
