KILNASAGGART CROSS INSCRIBED STONE
This is the oldest datable stone in Ireland and probably one of the most beautiful. On
one side (photo) are six early Christian crosses, five of which are circled and the other
is plain, and on the other (drawing) is a very large circled cross near the base, a large
cross near the top and a circled cross at the very tip of the stone. Between the larger
crosses is an inscription which reads " IN LOC SO TANIMMAIRNI TERNOC MAC
CERAN BIC ER CUL PETER APSTEL". It translates as "This place, Ternoc, son of
Ciaran the little, bequeath it under the protection of Apostle Peter". Ternoc died in 716
AD so this gives us an exact date for this stone. The stone measures 2.18m in height,
0.43m in width and 0.18m in depth and access is easy from the road.
