MAYO PORTAL TOMB
MAYO PORTAL TOMB, COUNTY CAVAN
This ruined portal tomb, not marked on the early editions of the OSI or Historic maps,
is located on a low ridge in pasture, east of the town of Cootehill (Muinchille) & north
of the court tomb at Cohaw and the R192. The chamber, now incorporated into a field
fence, is quite damaged. It faces NW and is about 3m in length and 1.5m in width. At
its more northerly side, a portal-stone 1.55m in height, rises 0.85m above the adjoining
side-stone. Beyond this a low back-stone is set askew to the main axis of the chamber.
At the south, a side-stone is in place but the portal-stone has fallen. An
outward-leaning sill-stone marks the front of the chamber. A displaced slab in the
chamber may be part of a capstone. Another displaced slab lies to the north of the
fallen portal-stone.

N.B. -: The newer editions of the OSI maps places the portal tomb in the position of the
standing stone at Mayo & vice-versa.
