GORTEANISH MULTI-STONE CIRCLE
(AHAKISTA)
Hosting by Aabaco Web Hosting
This multi-stone circle is situated in an area of outcropping rock with dense furze and
brambles, overlooking Dunmanus Bay to the south. The circle was cleared of vegetation
on rediscovery in 1995. The circle is incomplete with four erect and seven prostrate
slabs which indicate a circle of eleven stones. Both entrance stones and the axial stone
are prostrate and the sockets for three fallen stones are visible with some packing
stones still in situ. The orthostats are 1.4m to 0.8m in height, 1.4m to 0.9m in width and
0.55m to 0.2m in depth . The internal measurement along the main axis which is
aligned NE-SW, is 7.5m. Two shallow pits were dug within the circle in modern times,
one at the centre and the other beside an orthostat to the south. The cover-stone of a
boulder-burial stands outside the circle to the south.
