| CLEGGAN COURT TOMB |

| This fine court tomb is located on the north banks of Cleggan Bay, north of Clifden (An Clochan) and is marked on the OS map as 'Druid's Altar'. It is perched on the edge of a steep cliff 5m away and consists of a small gallery, orientated WNW - ESE, 2.5m in length & 2m in width, which is double walled on the NE side and some evidence of double walling on the SW side. Only 2 orthostats remain erect on the SW side. The gallery leads into a small ante-chamber, 1.8m in length & 1m - 0.8m in width, with the main chamber, 2m in length & 1m in width, covered by a roof-stone, 3m in length, 1.3m in width and 1m in depth, which is supported by two side-stones and two door jambs. The back-stone is sunken below the surrounding soil. There is some evidence of a cairn but most seems to have been washed away by the sea. |
