These nine ogham stones have been collected from the surrounding area and arranged in this circular enclosure that was once the site of Ballintaggart church, but no visible traces remain of this. Stones 4 & 6 were first discovered in a field fence to the south and stones 5 & 9 also came from a field to the south. Stone 7 came from a ditch next to the site and stones 1, 3, 8 & 2 came from the cairn inside the enclosure. All the stones are water rolled oval boulders similar to those found on Minard beach. Four of the stones bear crosses along with ogham inscriptions, the most interesting of these is stone 5 which bears a 3-pronged cross on its side arms while the others (stones 2, 6 & 8 ) bear plain crosses. |
