At last my first successfully visit to a souterrain. Not a place to visit on your own and i am extremely grateful to the landowner for helping me gain access to it. The site is located in the west of the Rath and with the landowners help and a handy ladder I climbed down into the chamber. The chamber is almost 3m in height and the same in diameter with a beautiful corbelled roof. The dry-stone walling looks like it was only completed yesterday and two passageways run off to the east and south. The eastern passageway runs for about 11m but is collapsed in at the other end blocking access to a possible chamber or the original entrance. The southern passageway runs for about 7m and is also blocked.A fantastic monument but if you visit please be careful and if possible locate the landowner who lives only 100m further down the track. |
