KILLONEERY PORTAL TOMB, COUNTY KILKENNY
Situated in level pasture land, facing south east, this collapsed portal tomb is located
just 100m west of the River Lingaun, (An Loinnean) which defines the border between
County Kilkenny and County Tipperary and is a large tributary of the River Suir and
joins it to the east of Fiddown, (Fiodh Duin). The elongated capstone, which has
slipped backwards, measures 3.8m in length, 2.6m in width and 1.6m max; in depth,
has collapsed into the chamber and is slightly elevated at the entrance by the inward
leaning portal stones, originally 1.4m in height. The back-stone has been crushed
under the capstone and the door-stone is covered with cairn material. The chamber is
filled with field clearance and the tomb sits on a low sub-circular mound 10m in
diameter.
