SAINT BRIDGID'S STONE BALLYBUGGY BULLAUN STONE |
As you open the gate to this monastic site and walk up along the half mile ancient track way, you cannot help but wonder how many pilgrims had made this exact journey. The track is sunken below the level of the surrounding fields and a dry-stone wall guides you to the well and graveyard. 10m before the graveyard you come to St.Bridgid's Stone, a bullaun stone set upright in the earth and in front of it is a kneelin stone, where tradition holds that you pray before kissing the centre of the bullaun. The stone is 1m in height and about 0.70m in diameter with patches of moss and lichen on its surface, while the bullaun is 0.25m in diameter. The kneeling stone is about 0.25m square, just about enough room for one knee.A special place and a very special visit. |
