BALLINLEANA SUN-DIAL
This beautiful early Christian Sun Dial, marked on the Historic map as 'St. Cummins
Well' and on the OS map as 'Holy Well', is located in the burial grounds of Kilcummin
Church on the shores of Killala Bay, 'Cuan Chill Ala', which was abandoned in the
middle of the 19th century. The stone, 0.40m in height, 0.38m in width and 0.07m in
depth, is half submerged into the ground. The gnomon hole is 10mm in diameter,
tapering to 5mm at the back. There are four time-lines, which taper to a three - prong
end showing the prayer times for the day, Morning prayer, Mid -day prayer, Afternoon
prayer and Night prayer. It has been dated to 700 AD. A Stone pair is located 10m NW
of the Sun Dial and a Holy Well, 20m SE.
