CASTLEHILL 1 WEDGE TOMB, COUNTY MAYO
This finely preserved Wedge Tomb, not marked on either the Historic or OS maps, is
located south west of the village of Ballycroy, 'Baile Chruaich'. The tomb, orientated
NE - SW, consists of a long wedge shaped gallery, 5m in length and 1.5m in width,
divided into two chambers. The walls of the gallery are lined with three slabs on the
north side and two slabs on the south side, averaging 1m in height and smaller
orthostats inside these, forming double walling. The ante-chamber is filled with cairn
material, whiles the main chamber, 2.5m in length and 1.1m in width, remains
relatively clear and is covered by a single roof-stone. There is no backing stone and the
rear of the tomb is piled up with small stones and earth, possible field clearance.
