CARTRONAGLOGH WEDGE TOMB
This fabulous wedge tomb, not marked on either of the 1837 or 1885 editions of the
OS 6-inch map, and mark as ‘megalithic tomb’ on the OSI modern map, is located
on the SE slopes of Kilronan Mountain in a clearing in a modern coniferous forest,
north of Keadew (Céideadh) and east of Lough Meelagh. The structure, orientated
ENE-WSW, survives as a wedge shaped chamber and portico, separated by a sill-
stone. The chamber measures 4.8m in length, 1.95m in width at the west end, to 1.8
m in width at the north end, and consists of ten orthostats ( 0.6m-0.3m in height)
and a back-stone which measures 0.75m in height, 1.7m in width & 0.35m in depth.
The portico at the west end, measures 2m x 1.35m, and is separated from the
chamber by a sill-stone measuring 0.3m in height x 0.7m in width x 0.25m in depth,
which does not block the opening. There is no evidence of roof-stones surviving.
The site can be accessed from a forest road and is sign-posted.
