KING DAITHI'S  STONE
'THE RED PILLAR'

Coirthe Dearg, is a red sandstone pillar said to mark the resting place of the last pagan
king of Ireland, Daithi, who was the nephew of Niall of the Nine Hostages. It is sited
on top of a low double-ditch ring barrow at the end of an ancient stone trail 800m SE
of the souterrain at
Owenygat. It measures 1.8m in height, 1.3m in width and 0.25m in
depth at the base and is orientated N - S. The stone sits in the middle of a shallow
hollow and is firmly lodged in the ground with packing stones at the base of the stone.
The outer ditch of the ring barrow is 80m in circumference with a diameter of 16m
from the edge to the stone.
