| OWENYGAT SOUTERRAIN CAVE OF THE CATS |
| Owenygat is a natural limestone cave, whose entrance was modified in the early medieval period by the construction of a souterrain. The cave is possibly the Cave of Cruachu, described as the Gateway to the Underworld in the early Irish tale Echtra Nerai. The entrance to the souterrain ( Uaigh na gCat in Irish ) is by a circular ring which may be an Iron age burial place and extends 3.5m and roofed by large lintels, two of which bear ogham inscriptions. There is a small chamber to the right which is normally filled with mud and to the left the tunnel continues to join with the cave. |
