| This magnificent Portal Tomb, marked on the OS map as 'Giant's Grave', is located in pasture at the head of a narrow valley opening to the NW and Carrane Hill to the east. This well-preserved tomb, known locally as 'The Labby Rock', and ‘Nuada's Grave’, faces uphill to the SE and consists of a chamber, 2.1m in length and 0.9m in width at the front - 1.5m at the rear, with the sides and back consisting of single stones. The front of the chamber is formed by two portal-stones, 1.4m in height, and a door-stone 1.1m in height. The structure is covered by a huge rectangular capstone measuring 4.8 m in length, 3.4m in width and 1.6m in depth and is estimated to weigh 70 metric tons. It is resting on all the orthostats except for the more southerly side-stone. The top of the capstone is almost covered in peat growth. |
