| The fifth century saint Attracta was a highly renowned miracle worker and healer. Her well here outside Monasteraden, Co. Sligo, is reputed to have cures for various diseases such as warts. The well is surrounded by a wall on top of which are several rounded stones cemented into it. Visitors would handle the stones,while women seeking assistance with childbirth would take a stone home for a period of time. The local custom was almost forgotten until recently but has been revived and the fertility aspect of the 'serpent eggs' is now applied in the old ways. |
