| This is one of the finest and largest Court Tombs in Ireland and is located just off the N15, north of Cliffony in north County Sligo and is marked on the OS map as 'Giant's Grave'. The tomb consists of a trapezoidal cairn, orientated NE-SW, that is 58m in length on the north side and 55m in length on the south side. It tapers from the NE side, which is 25m in length to 6m at the SW end. The court, which faces NE, is circular in shape and is 17m in diameter and is entered by a 6m long entrance. There are two chambers, separated by jambs stones, the 1st and largest, is 6m in length, 4m in width and 3.5m in depth while the 2nd, slightly smaller, measures 5m in length, 3m in width and 2m in depth. At the narrow end are two further graves which have been inserted into the cairn at a later period. Excavations have dated the tomb to the middle Neolithic period, around 3,000 BC, while the inserted graves may have been Bronze Age, around 2,500 BC. |
