TAWNYMUCKLAGH WEDGE TOMB
This much over-grown wedge tomb, not shown on any edition of the OS 6-inch
maps but marked on the OSI map as 'megalithic tomb', is located in rich rolling
pasture 600m South-East of Monasterren (Mainistir Readain) & 600m West
Lough Gara (Loch Ui Ghadhra) in a field next to a private dwelling. The West
facing tomb, built with small orthostats, is sited in a low mound (10m E-W; max.
8m N-S; H 0.5m) and consists of a gallery, 6.7m in length, that is divided by a
septal-stone (broken in 2 pieces) into a portico & a main chamber and surrounded
by the remains of an outer-wall. The portico, 1.5m in length, is formed by two
stones at the south and another fallen stone at the north side. The wedge shaped
main-chamber is 5m in length, 1.2m in width at the septal-stone, that tapers to
0.9m in width at the back & is out-lined by six stones to the north and five to the
south. The outer walling is represented by seven stones to the north, by seven stones
to the south and by a single orthostat at the back. There are 2 fallen façade-stones
to the west linked the southern outer-walling to the front of the portico, while a
single thin façade-stone stands just forward of the northern outer-walling.
