| Knockgraffon (Cnoc-Rafonn in gaelic), was originally the sacred inauguration site for the kings of Munster and it became the primary residence of the O'Sullivan clan. In 1192 the Normans successfully took the site from the O'Sullivans and built this classic defensive motte on the site. There would have been a wooden structure on the top before being replaced by a stone tower, the scant remains of which can be seen scattered on the summit. It is about 20-30m in height and is a National Monument but has never been investigated archaeologically. On the summit are panoramic views of the Galtee, Knockmealdown, Comeragh and Slievenamon mountains and the river Suir in the valley below. It is located about 5kms north of Caher in County Tipperary and can be accessed through a stile but parking is safest on the opposite side of the road. |
